English 5561 English Romanticism

Professor Carol Bock

In this course we will study works from the Romantic period of British literature.  In addition to reading the “big six” Romantic poets—William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, George Gordon Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats—we will also examine some of the key political writings of the era—for instance, Thomas Paine’s The Rights of Man and William Godwin’s Politcal Justice.  We will also study poems by less well known writers, such as Charlotte Smith and Mary Robinson, as well as creative non-fiction by Thomas De Quincey.
