CLA student, Elisabeth Pedersen is an intern at KUMD Duluth Public Radio spring semester 2011.
What is your major?
Where was your internship placement? (What is the purpose of the organization?)
KUMD Duluth Public Radio. It is the local public radio station located at UMD that provides the community with a resource for news, music, and entertainment. I intern as a producer for a segment called “Radio Gallery” which is a show about ideas, people, and artists in Minnesota.
What did your general duties involve?
I work with the host of Radio Gallery, Maija Morton, to set up interviews with artists from Minnesota. I contact the artist to set up an interview, and then help produce a five-minute segment. I also write an article about the artist and their work and update the homepage each week online at www.kumd.org.
What was your most memorable experience?
One experience I really enjoyed was when I had the opportunity to conduct the interview with the artist. All of my experiences at KUMD have been sweet because I have been able to meet great people, learn what to do as a producer for a radio segment, and work in a broadcasting environment.
Has your internship influenced your career path?
Yes, and it definitely provided me with a solid base, and a path to follow. When I began volunteering at KUMD as a freshman I dj’ed once a week and really enjoyed being involved. I have always been interested in broadcasting, but was never sure how to pursue it as a career. After volunteering at KUMD and having the opportunity to be an intern, it has definitely given me a taste of what it’s like to work in broadcasting and I hope to continue working in public radio in the future.
