Student: Pat Swenson
Internship: St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office
What is your major?
Criminology, minor psychology
Where was your internship placement?
My internship takes place at the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office here in Duluth which basically covers everything in St. Louis County south of Cotton.
What did your general duties involve?
During my internship with the Sheriff’s Office I was exposed to a variety of different divisions within the organization. The majority of my time was spent as a “ride along” out on patrol. During my shifts on patrol I was able to observe a variety of different calls from accidents on the highway to domestic disputes, traffic stops, search warrants and serving civil papers to name a few. I was able to answer calls on the radio as well as enter information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for a variety of calls. I was also able to spend a couple shifts with the Civil/Warrants division serving civil papers and warrants and a couple shifts at the St. Louis County Jail observing daily operations of inmates and corrections officers.
What was your most memorable experience?
My most memorable experience while interning at the Sheriff’s Office was being along during the warrant in Fredenburg Township that resulted in the confiscation of 498 marijuana plants and thousands of dollars worth of marijuana growing equipment. The warrant was one of a series of warrants that took place over a three day period. The bust was a collaboration of warrants in Carlton County, the city of Proctor and in St. Louis County which totaled one million dollars worth of marijuana and thousands of dollars worth of growing equipment. It was one of, if not the biggest marijuana bust in St. Louis County history.
