Laptop Initiative

All incoming CLA students are required to have a laptop computer.

CLA Laptop Requirement

CLA continues to develop its technology initiative, which over time will result in all CLA students actively using laptop technology in their courses and course assignments.
The laptop requirement supports our effort to ensure that CLA students gain valuable technology skills and experience as an integrated part of their education in the humanities and social sciences: making students more competitive in their future academic and professional careers.

Laptops should have these minimum specifications:

• Windows XP Pro or Mac OS X preferred
• 1.2 GHz CPU (Centrino, P4-M / Mac)
• 40 GB or greater hard drive
• 512 MB RAM
• 10/100 Ethernet
• 56K modem for off-campus dial-up
• 802.11b wireless card
• Reecommend: 3-4 year maintenance plan

UMD requires antivirus software (note Symantec Norton Antivirus is made available at no charge to all UMN Students).

Financial Aid for Laptops
