Access to Your Academic Records

UMD cannot release your grades to your parents or any other third party without your written consent.

Record Privacy

In compliance with the Federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and the Regents' Policy on Access to Student Records, the University is prohibited from providing certain information from your student records to a third party, such as information on grades, billing, tuition and fees assessments, financial aid and other student record information. * This restriction applies, but is not limited to, your parents, your spouse, or a sponsor.

Public Record

Some student information is a matter of public record or directory information. University officials and departments may provide this information in answer to inquiries without requiring authorization from you:

Prevent Release of Public Record Information

You may prevent release of public information outside the University. You can do this on the Student Self-Service website (www.d.umn.edu/Register) under View/Change Your Personal Info. The suppress remains in effect until you request removal.

There are two options available:

  1. Suppression of address and phone information:
    • Postal address, e-mail address, and phone number will not be released to third parties.
    • No information will appear in the next edition of the University's on-line or printed directories. For the UMD Campus Directory which appears in November, complete the suppress before the end of the third week of fall semester.
  2. Suppression of all information
    • No information will be released to third parties

Granting Access to Your Records

You may, at your discretion, grant the University permission to release information about your student records to a third party by submitting a completed Student Information Release Authorization form to the Solon Campus Center Information Desk. You must complete a separate form for each third party to whom you grant access to information on your student records. The specified information will be made available only if requested by the authorized third party. The University does not automatically send information to a third party.

The student Information Release Authorization form is available at the Student Assistance Center, 23 SCC, or online at http://www.d.umn.edu/registrar/access.html
