Calculate Your Grade Point Average
Three grade point averages are pertinent to your academic standing and/or graduation eligibility:
- your semester grade point average, which is the average of your grades for a single semester;
- your cumulative grade point average, which is the average of your grades for all course work you have attempted within the University of Minnesota system;
- your major and minor grade point averages, which are the average of your grades for courses required for your major or minor. You need to achieve a 2.0 average in all major and minor course work (calculated separately) in order to be eligible to graduate.
The College of Liberal Arts uses your cumulative GPA to determine if you are in good academic standing. When your advisor asks you what your grade point average is, s/he will almost always mean your cumulative grade point average.
How to Calculate Your Semester Grade Point Average
Each grade carries the following grade points: A=4.00; A-=3.67; B+=3.33; B=3.00; B-=2.67; C+=2.33; C=2.00; C-=1.67; D+=1.33; D=1.00; F=0.00. Credits associated with the grade F are not applied toward the credit total needed for graduation but are included in GPA calculations.The grade N does not carry credits or grade points. The grade S carries credits but no grade points. The amount and quality of work required for a grade of S may not be less than that required for a C (2.00). Do not calculate your S/N credits into your GPA.

How to Calculate Your Cumulative Grade Point Average
In order to calculate your cumulative grade point average, simply divide your total grade points (for all work completed within the U of MN system) by the total number of A-F credits you have attempted.Use this same formula to calculate your average GPA for major or minor courses.
