How To Declare Your Major

If your desired major is within the College of Liberal Arts (your current collegiate unit), then you can declare your major simply by stopping in the CLA Student Affairs and Advising Center (SAAC), 310 Kirby Plaza. The SAAC receptionist will assist you in declaring your major. You may also declare your CLA major via e-mail. E-mail your name, student ID number, and desired major to clasa@d.umn.edu. Once your major is declared, you will be assigned to a faculty advisor within your field of study.

If your desired major is outside the College of Liberal Arts (your current collegiate unit), then you must submit a Change of College form to the collegiate unit that houses your new major.  The Change of College form must be submitted by the end of the eighth week of the current semester in order for the change to go into effect the next semester.

You must meet the transfer admission criteria of your desired unit in order for your change of college request to be approved.  You are encouraged to check with the appropriate collegiate unit on their specific criteria:

• College of Education & Human Service Professions  -  120 Bohannon Hall
• School of Fine Arts   -  212 Humanities Building
• School of Business and Economics  -  21 SBE Building 
• College of Science and Engineering  -  140 Engineering Building

Declaring a Minor

You may also declare a minor by contacting the offices listed above. Again, you will need to meet any specific admission criteria for the minor. You do not need to have a declared major in order to declare a minor.
