Portfolio

The Electronic Learning Portfolio (Portfolio) allows you to manage information about yourself in a secure environment. It's like a huge online file cabinet that contains all of the information relevant to you and your learning. You decide who gets to look into your "file cabinet," what exactly they get to look at, and when they get to look at it.

Q. Why should I create an electronic portfolio?

A. Beyond simply keeping track of information, the purpose of the Portfolio is to help you actually demonstrate to advisors, potential employers, graduate schools, or others that you have the skills you claim to have. Instead of just saying that you have a particular ability, you can prove to the viewer of your Portfolio that you possess the ability by including a paper you wrote, a problem you solved, a presentation you made - the possibilities are endless.

Q. Where is the Portfolio housed?

A. Your Portfolio is part of the University of Minnesota Portfolio system and is kept on its servers. UM system information is automatically entered into your Portfolio; it is continuously updated. You will add other (self-reported) information by filling in text boxes as the system prompts you to do so or by uploading files from a computer disk. You can do this at any computer with an Internet connection.

Q. Who has access to my Portfolio?

A. Your academic advisor has access to pertinent UM Student Administrative System (SAS) academic information by virtue of being your advisor. Beyond that, you choose who has access to each piece of information found in your Portfolio. This is what gives you the power to manage your own digital information. You are allowed to give such access to any person with a University of Minnesota e-mail address or to any person outside the University for whom you set up a guest account. For example, if you apply for a job in Chicago, you could establish a guest account for that employer and then provide him or her access to career documents (such as a resume and cover letter) as well as uploaded papers and projects that demonstrate what you could do for this employer.

Q. How can I get help with Portfolio?

A. Technical problems can be answered by the UMD Help Desk (218-726-8849) or the Portfolio Help Line (portfolio@umn.edu). Free, drop-in assistance will be provided in the Career Services Resource Center; this is located in the Solon Campus Center. Resources are available for scanning documents and editing video and audio.
