ResNet Terms and Conditions
Your ResNet connection is a privilege. Each year UMD Information Technology Systems and Services (ITSS) is required by enforcement authorities to contact students who (often accidentally) share copyright files or misuse bandwidth. Each student is responsible for his/her network connection and any activity that occurs on that connection, including improper and/or illegal use by others - such as someone borrowing your system for "just a few minutes". You can easily avoid being contacted by ITSS or legal authorities by reading and following the rules listed below.
Restricted Activities
To ensure network security and reliability, ITSS reserves the right to disconnect any system that can be traced to exhibit excessive, unfriendly or illegal activities, including (but not limited to):- Commercial use: Network use is limited to classroom, course-related, or personal educational use, such as e-mail, course-work, and web browsing. Network use is restricted to non-profit use only; no commercial use of any kind is allowed.
- Servers: Personal servers are not allowed on the ResNet network. This includes file sharing servers (such as KaZaa and Morpheus) and web servers.
- Copyright infringements: Copying or providing copyrighted software, music or data of any kind is prohibited.
- Multiple devices: There is a limit of one Ethernet connection per student. Devices that may provide extra connections (repeater, wireless hub, router or gateway) are not allowed.
- Service interference: Includes excessive bandwidth usage, security breach attempts, network scanning, or physical damage to the network.
- Harassment or abuse: All incidents of harassment based on race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status or sexual orientation.
Disciplinary Action
The following actions will be taken for violation of these terms:- 1st Offense - Network service is disabled. Student receives warning and the incident is logged. Student must correct problem and confirm with ITSS staff before port is turned back on.
- 2nd Offense - Network service is disabled for 2 weeks. Individual is referred to the Student Conduct Code Coordinator for further action, which may include disciplinary probation or other sanctions.
- 3rd Offense - Network service is disabled for 2 months. Issue is turned over to campus police and more serious action is taken (determined by student conduct code coordinator) up to or including expulsion from the university.
