How To Declare or Change A CLA Major
(NOTE: This is for students who are enrolled through CLA. If students are enrolled in a different UMD collegiate unit they must submit a Change of College application.)
Congratulations on your decision to officially declare or change your major! If your desired major is within the College of Liberal Arts (your current collegiate unit), you need to:
- create a Preliminary Grad Plan (include all remaining degree requirements),
- print it (follow the instructions for the ‘Printer Friendly Report’),
- schedule an appointment with a departmental representative to discuss the plan you created.
To create a Grad Plan with your desired major go to the following site and begin: plan.umn.edu
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
- Plan for at least 12 credits per term
- Course pre-requisites
- When courses are usually offered
- Sequencing courses (e.g., Biol 1011, Biol 1012)
PROCESSING TIME
Once the departmental representative reviews your proposal, they will notify the CLA Student Affairs and Advising Center. The CLA SAAC office will process the approved application. You will be notified by email. This entire process could range from 1-2 weeks.

CHANGE OF COLLEGE
If your desired major is outside your current collegiate unit, then you must submit a Proposed Grad Plan along with a Change of College form to the collegiate unit that houses your new major. The forms must be submitted by the end of the eighth week of the current semester in order for the change to be effective for the next semester.
You must meet the transfer admission criteria of your desired unit in order for your change of college request to be approved. You are encouraged to check with the appropriate collegiate unit on their specific criteria:
College of Education & Human Service Professions - 120 Bohannon Hall
Labovitz School of Business & Economics (LSBE) - 111A LSBE Bldg
School of Fine Arts - 5 Montague
Swenson College of Science and Engineering - 140 Engineering Building

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO ADDITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM (Dual Degree)
An additional degree program is an undergraduate degree program that is different from the one you have completed or will be completing at the University of Minnesota. For example, you may be interested in pursuing a B.A. degree after completing a B.S. degree. Apply for admission to an additional undergraduate degree program only if you intend to complete all degree, major, and coursework requirements for the additional degree.
The University of Minnesota confers no more than one degree of any degree type to an individual student. For example, a student may not receive more than one B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota.
Declaring a Minor
Declare a minor by contacting the appropriate student affairs office listed above. Again, you will need to meet any specific admission criteria for the minor.
