About Edinburgh

Getting to Edinburgh and to the Epigenetic Robotics 2002 venue.

We highly stress that Edinburgh is extremely busy at the time of year the workshop is being held. Please make your bookings well in advance!

Edinburgh is easily reachable by air, train, coach, and car. Here are some links that can help you plan your trip:

  • Edinburgh Airport: Maps, facilities, airlines that serve Edinburgh, and public transport from/to the airport.
  • Train information: includes online timetables and planner. See also ScotRail's web page.
  • Coach information: includes online timetables, and fare quotations.
  • Travelling by car - these might be useful: Map of the city centre, map of the suburbs
  • Here is a map (postscript) of the city, and a map of the university central area and the surroundings.

You might find additional information about Edinburgh at:

  • Edinburgh's District Council Official Guide
  • Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board
  • Accomodation information (under construction)

Edinburgh offers a huge range of accomodation options ranging from magnificent five star hotels to homely guest houses to budget youth hostels. We have compiled below a list of few options (and we will be adding more over the next few days): they vary in their luxury level, but all are within reasonable distance from the workshop venue (less than 10-20 minutes walk, some even less), and have been checked/graded by either the Scottish Tourist Board, the AA, or the RAC. This only applies to the ones listed individually - you should check for entries listed as part of compilations. Some options have Web pages on the net, offering electronic booking etc.

Prices listed are per day, and are only estimates using current website quotes. Summer is the height of tourism, so book your rooms early! As of 1/17/2002, the below establishments had openings, but do not delay!

Some other hotels, very close to the venue (less than 10 minutes walk), without web entries (that we know of):
  • Carlton Highland Hotel, 1 North Bridge, Tel.: +44 131 556 7277 Fax: +44 131 557 2451.
  • Old Waverley Hotel, 43 Princess Street. Tel +44 131 556 4648 Fax: +44 131 557 6316.
  • Thistle Inn Hotel, 94 Grassmarket, Tel.: +44 131 220 2299, Fax +44 131 225 5244.
