Extra Credit Assignment: Close Analysis Essay Revision Guidelines
If you are unhappy with your grade
on your first essay, you have the opportunity to rewrite it for extra credit up
to (depending on the substance and quality of the revision) the equivalent of
one letter grade (ten points). This is only assignment that will be available
for revision.
What to do to receive credit
for the rewrite:
- First,
you will need to meet with me to discuss your essay and the best strategy
for revision, which will be based on the criteria listed on the assignment
sheet as well as any margin comments and markings on your essay.
- Second
and most importantly, your essay must reflect substantial revision. You
cannot merely change a few paragraphs around or correct the grammar.
Instead, you must make substantial changes for your rewrite to count.
Generally, the lower your grade, the more substantial your rewrite needs
to be. If your original grade is higher, you will have less to change; if you're
unsure about what constitutes substantial revision in your particular
case, please contact me. If you turn in an essay that is not substantially
revised, you will not receive any credit for it and your original grade
will be kept.
- Turn
it in with a copy of the original, graded paper with my comments and
grading rubric. If you do not have a copy of the graded paper, I will not
accept your rewrite, so keep your copy of the graded paper! (If you or
someone else has written on it too, that's fine; it doesn't need to be
pristine.)
- Turn it in by the deadline: noon on April 11. I will
not accept any late essays. You are welcome to turn it in anytime between
now and April 11, but you can only turn it in once. Don't leave it for the
last minute – last-minute revisions hardly ever qualify as
substantial.
