Guided Reading: Michael Heim's "The Erotic Ontology of Cyberspace"

Your Name

1. Let's first think about Heim's title:

Give a page number and brief quotation(s) that suggest what he means when he says the "ontology" of cyberspace? How is looking at the "ontology" of the Web different from just describing cyberspace as it is?

2. What does Heim mean by calling the experience or appeal of cyberspace “erotic”? Cite and explain a particular sentence or phrase from Heim including the page number. (How does he mean something more than pornographic Web sites?)

3. Heim observes that "being a body" is a significant part of our traditional notions of human existence.

In what ways is the disembodied experience of cyberspace a challenge to these notions? Quote or paraphrase and cite the page number(s) of how Heim develops ideas about these challenges.

4. Heim speaks of the network as "expanding" and "sprawling," taking us further from "face-to-face communication, the fleshy bond between people." Quote and comment on what Heim sees as the possible drawbacks of this growth and spread of cyberspace, and its penetration into our lives.

5. What is a "monad," and what does the idea of "monadologyfrom a 17th-century philosopher have to do with cyberspace. Quote/paraphrase Heim and cite page numbers.
