for Logos, Banners and Icons

Name Proposed Criteria, Examples and Comments
Andy Dickson

http://www.h2oguides.com/
The logo I am referring to is the H20 Helli-Guides in the lower right hand side of the screen.

Reasons why I liked this particular logo:
*Very simple
*Gives a very professional image (this is done by using basic colors and shapes)
*Catchy to the eye.
*Uses basic shapes in complex format.

Personally I think that a logo needs:
*To be catchy to the eye.
*Easily related to the thing its trying to sell
*Be easily recalled or remembered at a later time.
*I feel a "less busy" logo is easier for me to read.
*Br altering simple shapes into relative things a viewer can easily recall and relate a logo to everyday life.

Some websites I found that had pretty good examples of logos are:
www.gologos.com/html/port_corp.html
www.geocities.com/danpoonart/
www.enchantmentlogos.com
www.logo-mojo.com

Some of the things I think make a good logo are:
-not too many colors, too many colors tend to make it confusing or hard to read
-white backrounds tend to give logos a "cleaner" look
-bolder colors stand out to me more
-black and white almost always looks good

I've been searching for like 2 hours on different web sites trying to find a logo that appeals to me. This is the closest one. Criteria for a good logo (for me)
-Simple, yet a technical feel
-good color scheme
-little bit of humor never hurts either. (the caption under the logo is what
sold me... its not true, but funny none the less)

after hours of searching i found some ideas of logos i dont like
-ibm.com.... .. its been the logo since the start up of IBM... need a sublte
change.
-boondocks.net (once inside the logo was almost illegible.)
those are a few samples of ones that im not to fond of.

This site is a homepage for a sports radio station. The logo t me seems to lack the station's real idenity. Four Blocked letters show the stations call letters. The backdrop is a considerable problem as well. It lacks any real design and the logo as a whole lacks any real representation for the station and the topics it covers.

Some criteria the logo lacks
-Uniqueness
-Visually Catching
-Representative

I decided to look at all three logos for these companies because I work for them. After looking at them for quite sometime now, I realize that they are a little boring. Simplicity is good, but I think logos should be eye catching, bold, colorful, animated, sharp, and unique. Background and lettering is important as well.

To me, logos should be simple. Not necessarily simple in regards to visuality, but simple in the amount of information that is processed by those viewing them. should have color that works with the information being demonstrated (i.e. if the logo is for a Mortuary, one wouldn't expect to see brightly colored logo as it doesn't match with the subject matter). Lastly, the orgazination involved in the image should make me want to look at it for more than a split second. I want to look at the logo like a small, but nonetheless interesting piece of art.

Here are some works by David Carson. the first are scans of logo and cd cover images for Nine Inch Nails album "The Fragile". Carson provides the viewer with great juxtaposition of color and low-grade, off center photography. The logo for the band is cut in half and place on the images in area's that attract attention and visual stimulation.

My list of criteria for a logo is as follows:
1. Does it grab attention?
2. Is it simple or complex? (SImple is usually better)
3. Does it show creativity?
4. Does it connect with the site or idea it is associated with?
5. Is it original or is it a more historic logo? (for example a state's seal,
etc..)
6. Does it incorporate humor at all?

The logo I find is at the URL: "hungryminds.com"

I find this logo to meet some of the criteria I have listed above. It grabs my attention because it is humorous. I like the fact that it is incredibly simple, yet creative. I really do not see an obvious or direct connection to the site, but it is a logo that would not really directly connect with any particular site. I really admire it, for what it is, because I feel it does force people to look at it and possibly chuckle.

At this site is the Fender logo. I like this logo because it is very simple, yet it has a flair that grabs the eye. The unique style of lettering-combining upper and lower case letters-really adds flavor to it. The fact that it doesn't put too much strain on the eyes makes this logo appealing to me. My criteria for a suitable logo include:
-Having creative lettering
-Having unique structure(not boring horizontal)
-Being catchy without overdoing it
-Easy to Identify(not cluttered)

One of the things that i really like about the logo is its simplicity. I also like the contrast of black and white and the simple font of the word "globe". I don't really know what it means but I do like it and I think it looks cool

Justin Powers http://www.walleyetrips.com/
This is a Minnesota fishing guide service on Leech Lake It is sort of an anti-logo (text and a Leech Lake map blob) Nice color, but pretty generic. No real punch. Most links load fast (except "Why a Guide")

http://www.mcquoids.com/guide.html

Nice color. Logo is rather cartoonish. Very blockish shape and stuffed with text (probably won?t read reduced).

http://www.worldwidefishing.com/minnesota/fresh.htm

Nicest logo so far. Good color, shape and punch. It would probably be useful reduced.

http://hotspotguides.com/fishing/fguides_MN.asp

This one has useless elements already (so reduced that they?re visually inaccessible).The color is blah, also.

http://www.fishandgame.com/market/guides.htm

This one has nice elements, but nothing to die for. Good color and reduction would still work.

http://www.oregon-web.net/minnesota.htm

This one is yuk on so many levels.

The logo I selected is for a company named Briko. They specalize in various ski/snowboard gear. Their logo fit the criteria I came up with very well. They have created a logo and an icon that are easy to identify, but have some flexibility. I have seen the logos in several different shades/colors from place to place, but the text and imagery are always standard. I think thats kind of cool!
* eye catching
* easy to identify
* unique
* clean and uncomplicated

1) Logo should be immediately recognizable
2) Logo should complement the rest of the page (webpages)
3) Can be effective with or without images-depending on the medium and the audience.
4) Acronyms seem very effective
5) Simple is better than complicated
6) Color choice is critical-sets mood etc.
7) Perfect symmetry is not necessarily a good thing
8) The color blue is overused in logo design

Here is a url with a lot of examples that I used, my favorite is the Affinity Software Solutions one. This logo doesn't have any images, just cool use of typography. It's very sleek and modern looking and presents the image of a hi tech software company. It's all black, which to me sets up a feeling of modernity and stylishness. It's also fairly simple so it's easy to comprehend and recognize at a glance.

Matthew Woestehoff what I found was located at: http://www.quark.com
It is the logo or graphic for QuarkXpress. Some of you know that this is a publishing software, rightfully so the graphic is well representative of Quark and it's uses. I think that that is one of the most valuable parts to a successful logo- that it be representative of its product and the only other qualification to me is that it be memorable- after all, that is what it is supposed to do- make the client's audience remember their product. I have rambled long enough
Molly Rivers www.theeditors.com
The is a website for a graphic design company. The reason I looked for these types of websites is because they know how to use layout, color and how to unify the both together.

Things I look for are:
color scheme
classic neatness
straight forward layout of graphics
unique graphics

Nicholas Roessler

my logo is for www.superbowl.com. i like how they decided to incorporate more of a national theme for the logo this year as opposed to a city theme like they usually do. it is bright and bold and symbolizes the things that are important about the game.

Nicholas Schmidt

here's three sites that i think have a good logo.
www.beer.com
www.rockclimbing.com
www.imdb.com

these sites use logos that:

-incorporate a company's product/service
-are easy to look at
-are simple, yet appealing to the eye
-utilize good colors

Nichole De Mars <http://www.aveda.com>
I like this one because it is really simple. It is just black and white, and there are dots instead of lines for the letter A. This logo stands out, and it is easy to read.
<http://www.fossil.com>
I like the logo at the very top of the page. It is also simple, but it is streached a bit, which makes it look rounded. The font is very basic, and there is very little "extra" design. I sometimes think that the words of a logo are lost when a graphic is overpowering.
<http://www.golfhere.com>
I like this one because it is a little abstract. It incorporates color, objects and text, but I think it fits well.
Nissa Boetcher

I found all of these logos on coolhomepages.com, where there is a listing of many more logos, many good ones. This symbol is for a company called interactive edge, and I thought it was creative how they combined the "I" and "E" to make this symbol. It is simple and eye catching.
http://www.coolhomepages.com/newstatic/Logos/12.html

This logo was for c-u online, and I think it adequately depicts their name. It makes you stop and look at it for a minute because it is so interesting. http://www.coolhomepages.com/newstatic/Logos/3.html

This logo is for a company called olive media, and it was a very creative way to depict an olive into an O, and at the same time create an original logo for the company. http://www.coolhomepages.com/newstatic/Logos/22.html

Sarah Harrington The first website that I saw was the Art Version website, not only is the logo for this website very unique, but under the heading of advertisment they also gave a variety of different and unique logos that businesses could use.
<http://www.artversion.com/logos.html>

A good logo to me is one that is eye catching, and has a lot of color. There needs to be a logo that will keep the attention of the viewer
Shanna Willie

www.pennywisdom.com
this site has the pennywise logo. this logo fits a few of my criteria including:
? something simple and catchy
? a unique font is important
? not too elaborate
this logo has been around for years and is very catchy.

Sheena Dooley
Teri Lefaver http://www.muralojoe.com/
I chose the logo for Muralo because it's unique. There's a variety of different colors in the logo which fits well for a paint manufacturer. I also like the different font.
Criteria:
-eye catching
-unique
-easy to read/remember
-colorful
-simple
Tina Hansen When viewing various logos I found that I critiqued most of them on style, color and how memorable it was to me. At http://explorebrainerdlakes.com a site for the brainerd area I found that by enlarging the "Lakes Area" in the written logo really caught my attention. This is very benefitial to Brainerd site, since it is a tourism based area. The logo was also very versatile. It fit well on the banner for the web, but would also work as a print logo on stationary. I thought that this logo was very well done since it is so versatile.
