Assignment 6. Creating an education web site

Description:

This assignment is an opportunity to develop your experience with creating and updating web pages.

Goals:

• Create accessible and effective web pages
• Select web page effects mindfully for intentional design
• Modify page content to serve as professional communication tool

Rationale:

The WWW can be and effective tool for communication. Learning how to manipulate it leaves you in a position to choose the degree to which you wish to be involved in web creation.

Planning:

• Read about web design, usability, accessibility, and related topics
• List five big ideas which will drive your web design for usability, accessibility, and solid web design
• Sketch a site map which illustrates your master plan for the flow of your web site
• Use Mozilla's Composer to create and modify your pages
• Use Adobe's Photoshop to create web-appropriate images for your site
• Use UMD's smb://samba/myweb/ to put and modify your web pages online

Instructions:

Create an index page which features

  • a brief or bulleted summary of your growing qualifications or assets as an emerging educator
  • links to professional pages outside of your website
  • multiple work samples of your technology proficiencies--each downloadable in multiple formats for accessibility
  • a favorite idea, quote, or statement which reflects your professional outlook
  • return navigation to your index page (or other pages if you wish)
  • thematic layout that will be present throughout your site
  • ease of viewing and navigation

Submitting your work

• Put your work to the web.
• Check it at http://www.d.umn.edu/~username (enter your user name after the ~)
• Send Dan an email message which features your URL in the form of a hyperlinked signature
