Education 3412/5412: The Computer in Education (4cr)
Focus: Basic Computer Literacy


This course serves is an the introductory course of the certification and meets all of the ISTE General Standards. These courses contains the same topics , however there is a graduate paper required if taken for the 5XXX level.  Either Educ 3412 or Educ 5412 meet the mandatory technology requirement for the UMD Department of Education, thus undergraduates can choose either of these to meet the degree requirement. 

Specific course topics include: The Computer as a System, Mac and Windows Operating Systems, Advanced Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Drawing, Working with Digital Images (software, cameras, scanners etc), Databases, Inspiration/Kidspiration, Graphics, Desktop Publishing, PowerPoint (traditional and non-traditional), iMovie (digital video editing), Web Development, PDAs and Pocket PCs, and Peripherals to Include Digital Cameras, Scanners, external Speaker, access to the Internet etc.  Finally, students will explore a variety of topics entitled "What's New in Educational Technology".  Topics include such items as Wikis, Blogs, Furling, Podcasting, Google Docs, the Digital Divide, Rubistar, On-line Citation Machines, Assistive Technology, Ergonomics, Internet/Technology Addiction, Skype, iTunes, Grolier's on-line Encyclopedia, Google Earth, RSS Reader Aggregators, and on-line photography websites etc.

Each student will develop an individualized reference portfolio to document and showcase their newly acquired computer and technology skills.

Fall: MW 10-11:50, 1-2:50, 3-4:50, Tues 5-8:50
Spring: MW 1-2:50, 3-4:50, Tues 5-8:50

J term and May term - 2 week sessions

Summer School - Weeks 1 and 2
