About this web site

The lessons in this web site are designed to polish your writing so it is clear and readable in either an academic or professional setting. The lessons focus on full-length samples from a variety of disciplines. They contain minimal information on grammar, assuming instead that most college students and professionals have a basic command of grammar fundamentals. If you need help with language fundamentals, see the UMD Composition Department's companion web site, Snow Plow, referenced below.

The lessons for this site are in the table to the left. Simply click on the words to open the lesson.

Each lesson contains examples and exercises drawn from professional writing and from student papers in both freshman and advanced composition courses. These examples represent assignments in Comp 1120, College Writing; Comp 3121, Business Writing; Comp 3130, Writing for Engineers; Comp 3140, Organizational Writing; Comp 3150, Writing in Sciences; and Comp 3160, Writing in Social Sciences.

If you are going through this for your own benefit, browse the instructional pages and the examples. If they are not clear, or if you want individual help with any of the concepts taught here, set up an appointment with the writing lab, also referenced below.

Comments and suggestions are welcome, including exercises and examples from other teachers to be included in future revisions.
