Attendance Requirements for Chem 4184-4185
General Requirements
Attendance from 2:00-4:05 p.m. on Fridays is mandatory for passing this course.
For 4184, students will prepare a written report, present a brief talk to the
class using visual aids and evaluate other seminars. For 4185, students will
participate in the annual Undergraduate Symposium by making an oral presentation
and attending other student presentations. For both courses students will attend
and evaluate weekly departmental seminars.
Implementation
The requirement for satisfactory participation in both the 2 pm class meetings
and the 3 pm seminar series includes the following:
- For the 2 pm meetings (Fall)
- Attend regular class meetings
- Attend a minimum of 75% of the in-class oral presentations and complete
the associated evaluation forms.
- For Fall 2006 there are 10 parallel sessions, 2 on each of 5 Fridays.
You should attend one full session each
Friday on at least 4 of the 5 Fridays.
- For the 2 pm meetings (Spring)
- Attend class meetings as scheduled. Class meetings will be announced
via email.
- For the 3 pm meetings
- Attend a minimum number of the regularly scheduled seminars.
- For Fall 2006, attend 10 of the 13
scheduled seminars (75%)
- For Spring 2007, attend 8 of the 11
scheduled seminars (2/3+) Reduced to 7 out of 10 due
to cancellation.
- Graduate student seminars are usually
scheduled in groups of two each Friday. One set of two counts
as one seminar
- Submit a completed "Chemistry Seminar Evaluation Form" immediately
following each seminar attended. Evaluation forms that are incomplete
or lack content may be rejected.
Exceptions
Exceptions to the attendance requirement for the 3 pm seminar series may be
granted under some circumstances by attending a different seminar. The general
requirements for replacing the regular 3 pm chemistry seminar with an outside
seminar include all of the following:
- Approval must be obtained in advance for each seminar.
- The seminar must have significant chemical content.
- There must be evidence that there is a scheduling conflict involving another
required University program that prevents you from regular attendance at the
3 pm chemistry seminar.
- After attending the seminar, submit within one week a written report including
the following information
- details of the seminar (title, speaker, time, place and the name of
the program or series sponsoring the seminar). A printed advertisement
from the program may be sufficient for this purpose.
- A brief review (one page) of the seminar inlcuding a summary of the
content and its significance in a chemistry/biochemistry context.
