The Eighth Annual Undergraduate Symposium and Spring Banquet, UMD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will be held April 13 and 14, 2007. All students registered in Chem 4185 are required to attend and present a seminar. This document addresses matters related to the seminar requirement. Scheduling of the technical program and other symposium events is managed by Joanne Ellis in the department office.
There are two separate programs of seminar presentations, depending on whether your presentation is based on your own laboratory research or on a published report in the literature.
Students in the departmental honors program will present a seminar on their research in the Ilenda program. This program is also open to students who are not in the honors program who have completed significant research, on the recommendation of their research advisor and approval by the symposium committee. The Ilenda program begins Friday afternoon and continues through part of Saturday. Plan your presentation for 20 minutes, including time for questions.
Seminars based on the published literature in chemistry and biochemistry journals, or on your own research project in these areas, are presented in one of the parallel sessions on Saturday. Plan your presentation for 15 minutes, including time for questions.
The process here is similar to the one used in Chem 4184. Each student selects a faculty advisor and consults with the advisor during the development of the seminar presentation. For those presenting on their own research, advisor and topic selection are obvious. Otherwise, consult with faculty for suggested topics, or see the suggestions for topic selection in Important Dates and Information for Spring Symposium. You have the option of extending your topic from your fall presentation. The general topical requirements are the same as last semester.
