CLA 1001 is a seminar course designed to facilitate the integration of the LCA learning community courses with your academic expectations.   The seminar supports the liberal education curriculum within the context of intellectual growth, academic goal setting, and major exploration.

In this section of CLA 1001 you will explore the purpose and mission of a university, a university education, the liberal arts, and your expectations for all of the above.   Along with these broad goals, and supporting your exploration of an university education, this seminar will offer training in study skills and time management - essential skills for academic success and enjoyment - and support and help in learning to navigate UMD in particular - as a campus, as a bureaucracy, and as a community.

The course requires that you complete brief assignments during each of the first eight weeks of the semester as well as attend all study tutorials, scheduled study groups meetings and two outside social events.   The instructor reserves the right to add quizzes or other homework assignments to the course requirements at any time.

This course will be graded.   Your grade will be determined as follows:

Homework

55 points

See Schedule.

In-Class Activities and Participation

40 points

Weekly.   See attendance policy.

Study Group Participation

35 points

Weekly.   See attendance policy.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance is mandatory for this course, and unless you have arranged in advance for an excused absence, you will not be able to make up any graded work.   After the missed class period, documentation is required for an excused absence - for example, from the ambulance driver carrying you to the hospital after you were stricken by sudden serious illness or injury in the cafeteria during lunch.   Short of this - phone or email before class begins. Because attendance is mandatory, if you have two or more unexcused absences, you will not pass the course.
