UROP & Other History Opportunities

1. The Undergraduate Research Opportuntities Program (UROP) is an excellent way for students to gain experience in history related fields with financial support from the University.

Currently, The Richard I. Bong World War Two Heritage Center has a number of projects awaiting an interested student, including curriculum development, exhibition planing, and research assistence for ongoing projects.

UMD students have also worked out UROP or internship opportunties with the Iron Range Research Center, Glensheen - The Historic Congdon Estate, The Tweed Musum of Art, and Sisu Heritage.

Please contact Dr. Hannah if you are interested in pursuing a UROP or internship opportunity.

Time is of the essence, the next deadline is October 8, 2007.

2. Native-American Veterans contact.

I have a grant to hire a student to attend Pow Wows as a way to begin cultivating relationships with Native Americans veterans in this region who would be willing to share their stories with a wider public, and in particular with the public through the auspices of the Bong Heritage Center. The Richard I. Bong World War Two Heritage Center aims to collect and present the history of WWII in this region, the war as experienced by those who joined the armed forces from this region, and the war as experienced by those who lived here in the 1940s -- including the so far largely overlooked experiences of Native Americans in this region. This job will offer the standard hourly rate for University of Minnesota research assistants.

3. History Day Mentors

History Day is a national program modeled after science fairs designed to encourage and support enthusisam and interest in the study of history at the High School and Junior High School levels. Minnesota History Day is a model statewide program, especially in and around the metro area of Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Minnesota Historical Society manages the History Day program here in Minnesota and is looking to encourage larger participation here in the north eastern portion of the state. To that end, the Minnesota Historical Society and the University of Minnesota are looking to hire up to five (5) UMD students as History Day Mentors. The program can always make use of volunteers as well.

Please contact Dr. Hannah if you are interested in this position.
