CURRENT PROJECTS

Articles:

"Protecting African Americans: The National Guards and Policing Racial Conflict, 1870-1917." Submitted to Journal of Social History, Fall 2006.

Books:

1) Minnesota's War: The Civil War in Documents.

I am working on Minnesota's War: The Civil War in Documents, an edited collection of primary source documents relating to Minnesota during the Civil War.   This volume will be part of a larger series The Civil War in the Great Interior, edited by Martin Hershock and Christine Dee, published by Ohio University Press.  The first two volumes, Ohio's War and Missouri's War are already in print. The Minnesota volume is tentatively scheduled for publication in 2008.

2) National Guard Anthology: CITIZENS, SOLDIERS, AND MEN: ESSAYS ON THE EMERGENCE OF THE MODERN NATIONAL GUARD

I am co-editing with Dr. Mark A. Potter of the University of Melbourne a collection of essays on the history of the National Guards in the United States between 1850 and 1950. The call for submissions may be found here, and our webpage is here.

3) Women Writing the Western Frontier: This new research project focuses on the interconnectedness of the western frontier with the eastern establishment, and in particular the role of women non-fiction writers in popularizing and explaining the western frontier. This project springs from my interest in Mary and Seth Eastman and their time at Fort Snelling, Minnesota in the 1830s and has branched out from there.

I began serious archival research for this project at the Minnesota Historical Society in August 2005, and continued with a trip to Washington DC in October, 2005, using research funds provided by the Department of History. This new research project opens an exciting new front in the social and cultural history of women, the frontier, and role of the US military as a mediating lens between 'east' and 'west' in the antebellum United States.   I expect this project to produce articles, conference presentations and a second monograph over the next several years.

I presented my first paper from this new project at the 2007 AHA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Session 41, 9:30-11:30am, Friday, January 5, 2007.
