Objectives:

• Students will understand terms for relative location: en, fuera de, hacia, a, para abajo, sobre, debajo de, alrededor de, entre, por/a través de, hacia arriba, a la derecha, a la izquierda
• Students will place things in appropriate rooms, in relationship to other items

Materials:

• Stan and Jan Berenstain, Bears in the Night (translate this)
• Photos of things for house
• Globe
• Calendar

Activities:

• Story
• TPR for each location term

Script:

M:  ¡Hola, clase! Hoy es el [número] de [mes].¿Como están? E:  Bien, gracias.

M: Vamos a leer un cuento de unos ositos: Ositos en la Noche. Estos ositos duermen en la cama, en el dormitorio, pero luego se levantan y salen y tienen una aventura. Primero, vamos a aprender unos gestos para algunas de la palabras en el cuento. (TPR for each of the location terms:

1. en - left hand, top to the left, open fist to the right; right hand, top forward, palm toward chest, fingers straight out and inside the left open fist*
2. fuera de - withdraw right hand from fist*
3. hacia - move right hand, fingers pointed left, toward left hand; left hand now open with fingers pointed straight ahead
4. a - right hand touches open palm of left hand
5. para abajo - right hand, palm down, moves down
6. sobre - left hand flat, palm down, fingers straight ahead; right hand, cupped palm, moves over left hand to other side*
7. debajo de - left hand flat, palm down, fingers straight ahead; right hand, palm open and facing down, moves under left hand and to other side*
8. alrededor de - left hand flat, palm down, fingers straight ahead; right hand, palm down, moves around left hand to other side
9. entre - left hand up, fingers open, palm facing right; second and third fingers of right hand pass through/between second and third fingers of left hand*
10. por / a través de - cup left hand, palm down; pass right hand, palm down, through and under left hand
11. hacia arriba - right hand, palm down, moves up
12. a la derecha - right hand pointed out to right
13. a la izquierda - left hand pointed out to left

M: Ahora, leamos el cuento. Escuchen. La segunda vez, vamos a hacer los gestos apropiados.

M: Ahora, tengo acá en las paredes fotos de diferentes partes de la casa: la sala, la cocina, el patio, el comedor, el dormitorio y el baño. Les voy a dar una foto, y les voy a decir dónde poner la foto. Por ejemplo, tengo estas plantas. Pongo las plantas en el patio. Ahora, E, pon la lámpara en la pared afuera de la casa. (continue with other items.)

M: Bueno, ya termina la clase. Son las 4:00 de la tarde. ¿Me das tu placa con tu nombre? Muchas gracias. Repitan, Muchas gracias. (Repetir con todos.)   Hasta el (lunes).  ¡Hasta luego! E: Adios.

* Notas

• Alternatively for these expressions, you could use real props. This method allows you to flow easily among all the words in the list.
