(Recall the following: Aztec parents loved their children. The birth of a baby, bebé, was a joyful occasion for the whole family. When it was time for the baby to be given a name, the family, familia, sent for a priest who studied the stars and could work out the meaning of the baby’s name. Girls might be called Quiauhxochitl (Rain Flower) or Atototl (Water Bird). Boys had names like Chimalpopoca (Smoking Shield) or Quauhcoatl (Eagle Snake).
M: We talked about the Aztec family this month. Can anyone tell me about names?
E: A priest gave the name.
M: Excelente. Does anyone remember what some of the names meant?
E: Eagle snake.
M: Fantástico. Smoking shield was another name…
