M: [Hold up fabric map of the world (or foam board with continents, etc.)]: Hola, clase. Today we are going to talk about some places and things people do in Spain, which is one country where people speak Spanish. Does anyone know where Spain is? If you do, levanten la mano (gesture to indicate "levantar la mano"; it is not likely that any one does, but if someone does, have them come show everyone on the map; otherwise, show yourself).
M: This is Spain. It is very far from where we live [point to Minnesota]. Spain has some things similar to us and some things which are different. I want to show you some things in Spain.
Slide 1: Alcázar - This is a castle, or "alcázar"; repitan, "alcázar". This alcázar is in Sevilla, a city in southern Spain. It was built long before Christopher Colombus came to the Americas, so it is very old.
Slide 2: Catedral - This is a cathedral, or "catedral", repitan, "catedral". This catedral is in Spain. It also is very old. There are many catedrales in Spain because Roman Catholicism is the main religion. Over 95% of Spanish people are Roman Catholics.
Slide 3: Restaurante al aire libre - What does this look like? [Students' responses.] [Yes,] This is a restaurant, or in Spanish, "restaurante". Repitan: "restaurante". Spain has many different restaurants, just like in the U.S., but one thing different from here in Duluth is that in many places the restaurantes serve outside, "al aire libre". Does anyone know of a "restaurante al aire libre" here in Duluth? [Hacienda del Sol]
Slide 4: Glorieta - This is a "glorieta"; repitan, "glorieta". A glorieta is a round intersection of many streets, and they are very common in Spain and in Mexico too. This glorieta has a fountain ("una fuente") in the middle. Repitan, "fuente". Does anyone know where you can find a "fuente" here in Duluth? [Canal Park, Lake Avenue, Miller Hill Mall] Is there any place here like this glorieta? [Maybe five corners; but it is not likely that all first graders in Duluth would know this spot.]
Slide 5: Corrida de toros - Here is a picture of a matador and a toro, in a corrida de toros. Repitan: matador; toro; corrida, corrida de toros. Muy bien. Bullfighting is an art that is very popular in Spain, and in Mexico too. During the season, there will be a corrida de toros every Sunday afternoon, just as there is a football game here on Sunday afternoons.
Slide 6: McDonald's - Does anyone know what this is? [Give hint by pointing to arches.] Spain has McDonald's just like we do here in the U.S. This McDonald's is a little fancier than the ones we are used to though. It has marble floors and big pillars outside of the doors. I'm sure, though, that Spain has many McDonald's like the ones here.
Slide 7: Biblioteca - There are also many libraries in Spain just like here in the U.S. Who here has been to our library in Duluth? The word for library in Spanish is "biblioteca". Repitan: biblioteca. This is a slide of La Biblioteca Nacional, the National Library. It is much bigger than libraries that we may be used to seeing, but there are libraries as big as this one in other cities in the U.S. [Point to Flag] What do you think this might be?
Slide 8: Bandera - This is the Spanish flag. In Spanish they say "bandera". Repitan: bandera. [If you have decorated the students' name tags with stickers of this flag, point this out.] Does anyone know what our flag looks like? Our flag has stripes and stars and the fifty stars on the United States flag represent the fifty states. Spain has something like states; they are called Autonomous Regions. The "coat of arms" on this flag has a castle (un alcázar) and a lion (un león), which represent the kings of Spain.
M: So, what are some things that are different about Spain, compared to the U.S.? [students answer]
M: What are some things that are similar about Spain? [students answer]
M: So, while there are some things different about Spain, like bullfighting --the corrida de toros-- and the castles --el alcázar-- and the huge cathedrals --catedrales--, there are also many similar things, like the biblioteca, los restaurantes, regions similar to states, even McDonalds. Also, the people in Spain are much like people here in the U.S. They have jobs and families similar to ours.
M: Bueno, clase. Eso es todo para hoy. Hasta el [día]. Adiós, clase.
