UMD Team

Bulldog Motorsports: A Brief History

The University of Minnesota Duluth Formula SAE team was started during the 2006-2007 school year as a student led group focused on designing, building, and racing a Formula 1-style race car. Several years previous, a number of the students from a mechanical and industrial engineering senior design class researched, designed, and built the first frame. In fall 2006 a group of students decided to form a team to finish designing and constructing the car, and thus the birth of the UMD Formula SAE Team. The first build took 3 years to complete. In May 2009 the team entered their first competition; the FSAE Michigan Competition held at the Michigan International Speedway in Jackson, Michigan. The team was one of only a select few first year teams to ever pass the technical inspection, and competed admirably. After many lessons learned from the competition the team started working on the second iteration of the UMD Formula SAE race car in the fall of 2009 with the intent to race again in June 2012. The UMD Formula SAE Race Car Team is always looking for new motivated members with a passion for engineering, design, business, marketing, and learning.
