Course Schedule: Sec 005

Office Hours: MWTH: 1:00 - 2:30

All students attending my class can reach me in my office during the office hours listed above or contact me by e-mail. I will be using email to communicate with you if necessary. You can also find more information on the Math 3280 Home Page ( http://www.d.umn.edu/~gfei/math3280 ).

Topics: The course will cover most the materials in the text (see Course Outlines for more details).

Exam: There will be three midterm exams (during the 5th week, the 9th week and the 13th week, I plan to give midterm exams on Thursdays ) and a final exam. Make-up exams are only allowed for documented illness or University excued absences and if the instructor is notified in advance. Make arrangements for a make-up as soon as possible.

Homework: Homework should be turned in at the beginning of Wednesdays' class period. Each completed homework problem will count 1 point unless it is graded, in which case the problem will count up to 5 points. The total homework points will be scaled to 100 points at the end of the term.

Lab: Six computer lab assignments (for 20 points each maximum) which involve the use of the computer software package MATHEMATICA will be given. The GTA for the lab section will help you during the reserved lab class period, and Lab assignments are also given and collected during that reserved period. The five best lab scores will count together up to 100 points at the end of the term. The lowest lab score will be dropped.

Note: Any work you do for homework assignments, labs and exams should conform to the "MINIMUM STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS HOMEWORK/LAB ASSIGNMENTS" -- see enclosed copy of the standards. You need to justify your results: "just the answer" is not sufficient for full credits. You may discuss the homework and labs with other students, received assistance from a tutor, GTA, or instructor. You should always do and turn in your own work!

Course Evaluation: A(90-100), B(80-89), C(70-79), D(60-69)

Attendance & Responsibilities: You are expected to attend all classes and keep up on daily assignments. Mathematics, like most subjects, is learned by doing, not by watching. If you try to solve the problems by changing the numbers in the examples, you will soon suffer from formula overload. You are responsible for everything that happens in class, whether or not you are present. You are expected to read sections in the text before the topic is dicussed in class.

POLICY STATEMENT: All students at the UMD must be in compliance with the student conduct code in the policies and procedures section of the 2005-2007 University Catalog, specifically in this course with regards to scholastic dishonesty. Academic integrity is of utmost importance and all procedures and sanctions will be followed as per the university catalog. The University of Minnesota is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to its programs, facilities and employment without regard to race, religion, color, sex, national origin, handicap, age, veteran status or sexual orientation.

DISABILITIES: An individual who has a disability, either permanent or temporary, which might affect his/her ability to perform in this class should contact the instructor as soon as possible so that he can adapt methods, materials and/or tests as needed to provide for equitable participation.
