Take-home assignment grading guide
I have had requests from several students to “formalize” what I’m expecting from students in terms of the written take-home assignments. In my mind, this is a very fair and reasoned request. Here is a formalization of my grading guide that I commit to adhere to “until further notice…”
|
Grade |
What performance
looks like |
|
A-range |
Student fully examines situation. Logically presents answer, and conclusions are supported by his/her analysis. There are few or no significant gaps in logic. (Gaps will often be highlighted by comments such as, “Have you thought about…?” “On the other hand, what if…?”) |
|
B-range |
Student fully examines situation. Answer is logical, although less complete than for an A-grade paper. That is, there are several instances where thinking appears incomplete or there are gaps in the student’s logic. |
|
C-range |
Student does not appear to have fully examined the situation. The answer is not logical, or there are clear logical gaps in the analysis (going from point A to point D, without discussing points B and C along the way). |
|
D-range |
Student does not appear to have fully examined the situation. The answer is not logical, and there are clear logical gaps in the analysis (going from point A to point D, without discussing points B and C along the way).. |
|
F-grade |
Student merely presents an opinion on the question. There is little logical explanation of why they believe as they do. |
