History:

Heller Hall was originally called Science Building Addition, later called the Mathematics-Geology Building and finally renamed in 1988 after Robert Leo Heller (1919-?). Dr. Heller was an Assistant Professor in 1950, hired to start a geology department at UMD. By 1988 the department had grown to 8 people and had a national reputation as an outstanding department. Heller helped establish many programs, and served as Acting Provost, Provost and Chancellor. The building was built in 1956-57 for $700,000.
