Only one person per team should install GlassFish. You will only be using its Derby database server, which will be shared by all members of your team.
To prepare for installing the server you should create a new folder for
the server using the UNIX mkdir
command and move into that
folder using the cd
command.
The commands below create a folder named local2
but you can
use a different name if you prefer.
gshute@ukko:~$ mkdir local2 /home/csfaculty/gshute/local2 gshute@ukko:~$ cd local2
You can use the UNIX cp
command to copy files from one
place to another.
Use this command to copy the GlassFish zip file from my public folder to
your new folder.
The " ." at the end of the command is important.
The period is the UNIX abbreviation for the current directory.
gshute@ukko:~/local2$ cp ~gshute/public/glassfish-4.1.1.zip .
You can use the UNIX pwd
command to show what folder you
are in, and the ls -F
command to list the contents of that
folder.
You should see something like the following.
gshute@ukko:~/local2$ pwd /home/csfaculty/gshute/local2 gshute@ukko:~/local2$ ls -F glassfish-4.1.zip
Now you can unzip the zip file with the UNIX unzip
command
and list the new folder contents with the ls -F
command.
gshute@ukko:~/local2$ unzip glassfish-4.1.1.zip zip output omitted gshute@ukko:~/local2$ ls -F glassfish4/ glassfish-4.1.1.zip
Most of the commands are given from inside the glassfish4
folder so you should use the cd
command to go there now.
The ls -F
command shows the contents of that folder.
gshute@ukko:~/local2$ cd glassfish4 gshute@ukko:~/local2/glassfish4$ ls -F bin/ glassfish/ javadb/ mq/ pkg/
There is a program, asadmin, that is located in the
bin
folder.
This command is needed to start or stop a database server.
It can also be used to start or stop the GlassFish application server,
but you will not be running GlassFish on ukko.
If you did start it earlier you will need to stop it.
There is one program, ij, that is located in the
bin
subfolder of the javadb
folder.
This command is needed to create a database.
