Character Entities

This is not a <tag>. The less than sign and greater than signed are formed by text "&lt;" and "&gt;". This gets the less than sign and greater than sign into the displayed text without the browser interpreting them as tags.

Character entities are also used to get special symbols to display in a web page. Here is a partial Character Entity Table.
