There are four inner panels and an outer panel in the applet below. Layout in the outer panel is controlled by a GridLayout. The four inner panels are controlled by four different layout managers. You can see the approximate borders of the panels by selecting "Line" from the "Borders" menu. You can see the layout managers of the panels by selecting "Titled" from the "Borders" menu.
You can see how the different layout managers deal with resizing by dragging the mouse around in the applet. Each of the buttons is identical except for its label. They all have a minimum size of 40 by 20, a preferred size of 50 by 25, and a maximum size of 60 by 30. Obviously, some layout managers ignore thes size hints.
