USE ITV

The effective use of Interactive Television was a base for ECh 5602, Seminar 2, in the Master of Education Cross Disciplinary Study of Children and Families Program. One of the course instructors, Betsy Quintero, had already taught many courses using ITV.

Betsy gave a short in-service for the other course instructor, Helen Carlson, and the peer mentor, Voula Heffernan. She showed them the main controls for focusing on the overhead projector and the various angles of the camera--how to do close up shots for example. We decided that Helen and Voula would co-instruct from the regular classroom seats, while Betsy would be at the podium and have major reponsibility for manipulating the controls.

In addition to the use of controls, we discussed how best to use ITV to enhance interactivity among the students and faculty. We decided that asking students to share photographs (via the overheads) would help "break the ice" among class members connected from three different campuses--University of Minnesota, Duluth; University of Minnesota, Crookston; Southwest State University. We also discussed how interact role-plays could be conducted through ITV.

Here is a collage of some of the photos of family, friends, and pets which we shared with each other.

It was amazing to participate in role plays across sites. For example, Michelle, at Southwest State was a member of a role play about child care in a homeless shelter with students from Duluth. Here are a photo collage and several clips from the role plays and final teaching presentations in which complex issues related to children and families were addressed.

After a role play where the Crookston students assumed the characters of various human service professionals, a Duluth student responds:

A student at Southwest also responds:
