LOCATE THE TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT TEAM
Faculty Consultants
Before the project began, Helen Carlson , Elizabeth Quintero, and Joan Karp, course instructors and Voula Heffernan, peer mentor, met with Campus Technology Consultants, Dennis Falk , a professor in the Department of Social Work and Steve Downing, a professor in the Medical School. They wanted an overview of all of the supports that were available on the UMD campus to create synchronous and asynchronous interactions(in Cyperspace) among class members and with the instructors. These Cyperspace connections would complement an ITV distance education class with ten students on three campuses and in ten different work/home sites. The teaching staff learned that what they were proposing had not yet been done on their UMD college campus and that their timelines were short. They learned about the faculty development space and the student tech support team hired to help the faculty learn new technologies.

Hear words of caution and support.
Denny:"It takes lots of time to prepare the technology. Be sure to rehearse all the possibilities before your try it with the class."
Steve:"Go for it....try out your ideas. It's worth taking the risk."
Denny:"Become familiar with campus hardware and software. Let's try this this Mac 8500 over here."
Helen:"Let's explore what's available on the Web with chats."
The photograph shows Steve in the Computer Lab ready to give us his insights.
We met our student assistants in the Faculty Technology Laboratory. Their names were Bob Pearson and Miranda Pollock. They began by showing us more details related to potential ways to create connections. We discussed how we could send case study papers up to twenty pages and how we could connect students as they worked in their home groups.

Helen:"Let's review ways we could connect students for synchronous chats.".
Miranda:"You could use the telnet option."
Betsy:"We need to discuss format for entry of course syllabus on Web for 5602. Should I send the course syllabus by e-mail or give you a disc?"
Bob:"Let's try the disc. I can copy it."
This photograph shows Bob ready to give some words of advice.
