Reflection Paper #2: School Visit - Examining Multicultural Aspects of School

In responding to all of these questions, it is essential that you refer to and integrate concepts from the class readings (readings assigned both by Kajsa and Helen), from classroom discussions, from school visits, from observations in your travels, and by constantly reflecting on your personal journey in understanding human diversity. See the grading rubric for details on our expectations.

  1. Explore the school building. Notice (and take photos if you can) features of the building, the signs, the pictures, the displays, student work etc. What kinds of diversity do you see represented in what you observe of physical/visual signs? What kinds of diversity are missing/not visible in the physical/visual signs?
  2. To what extent do you see examples of the different dimensions of multicultural education described by Banks (as discussed in class, namely: content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, equity pedagogy and empowering school culture).
  3. Observe the way people interact, how they treat each other, what they say: What are some similarities that you see in the ways the teachers interact with the students in the school you are observing and the schools that you attended as a child? What are some differences? Example: how students address teachers; the responsibilities given to students by teachers; what respect means in the culture of this school. What are similarities and differences in the ways students interact with each other?
  4. What visible diversity do you see amongst the student population? And amongst the teachers? Consider as many different ways are describing diversity as possible. What similarities do you see?
  5. What do you think some of the cultural norms, expectations, and values are in this school, based on your observations of the physical environment and of the behavior of people (teachers, students, and others) in it? Do you think these norms, expectations. and values are the same for all in the school, or do you see differences among different groups or individuals in the school? (Explain your reasoning)
