Graduate Research Paper
If you are working towards a Master's Degree, I encourage you to use this
assignment to help you with your literature review or some other aspect of
your thesis. I will be happy to
meet with you to help you explore your ideas for this paper.
Purpose of this assignment:
At an undergraduate level this course is a skills-based course with a basic
theoretical foundation. Graduate students are expected to develop a more in-depth
understanding of the theoretical foundations in Teaching with Technology.
Task:
- Research an area of interest to you in some area related to teaching with
technology.
- Develop a research paper proposal outlining the objectives of your paper,
suggesting an outline of the paper, and including at least 5 potential sources
of information (these should be listed in correct APA form). This proposal
is due June 25th.
- Write a comprehensive research paper on the topic of your choice. Your
paper should demonstrate an thorough understanding of this topic and should
be supported throughout with reference to at least 5 different reference
sources.
- Format: APA
- Length: Suggested minimum of 5 pages double spaced.
What you should turn in:
- Research proposal: Due June 25th.
- Completed research paper on July 2nd(or negotiate date with Helen). You
may turn it in as a paper copy, send it to hrallis@d.umn.edu as an attachment,
or post it on your web site and send Helen the URL when you have completed
your paper.
Rubric:
I expect this paper to be written at a graduate level (the same quality that
is expected of you for your Master's thesis). I therefore anticipate that you
will earn an "A."
To help you with specific standards you must meet to earn this A:
- Clearly structured and organized. Be sure to introduce your topic clearly,
explaining the purpose of the research that you undertook and how you have
organized your paper (your proposal will help you here as your paper introduction
will be very similar to your proposal).
- Original work, going beyond a mere synthesis of what you have read to giving
your own analysis of your findings.
- In depth. Be sure to explain each section clearly, showing depth of understanding
of the topic and the areas within your chosen area.
- No grammar or spelling errors.
- Correct (APA or equivalent) use of citations and references. You should
include at least 5 different reference sources (most of which should
be from professional literature in your area).
