Developing a Digital Field Trip or "How-To" Guidelines

Task:

Develop a digital field trip or set of how-to guidelines to teach students about either (a) something to do with the UMD campus (e.g. the library) or (b) how to perform some skill (e.g. use a digital camera, throw a basketball).

1 Identify the objectives of your trip/guide -- what you want students to be able to do as a result of taking viewing your tour. (e.g. As a result of taking a digital field trip of Bagley Nature Area, students will be able (a) to identify the types of rocks found at the pond (b) Explain the origins of the rocks & how they came to be at Bagley  
2 Identify the audience and the context in which they would be using the tour (e.g. High school age students who will view this as a self-instruction learning center as part of a geology unit).  
3 Decide on the program that you will use to create your tour (e.g. PowerPoint, Word, Inspiration). Explain why you have chosen this program (taking into consideration the needs of the students, your own skills, and how the features of the program make the program an appropriate tool for achieving your objectives. The program should be an effective tool to showcase the pictures and to enable you to provide the necessary text, hyperlinks, and other features that are required for your tour.  
4 Create the tour using the program that you have selected, incorporating pictures, text, and other features as relevant and applicable to the task (e.g. links to the Internet or to other programs, music, narration).

Critique the effectiveness of your tour. Identify and explain strengths and weaknesses of your tour in appearance, function and content and appropriateness:

  • a. For the knowledge, skill level and needs of the students
  • b. For the knowledge, skill level and needs of the teacher
  • c. Of the type of application given the tour objectives
