Overview:
Teaching students to use the Internet
1. DO NOW: Working on your own, typing your responses into a M.S. Word document on your laptop, reflect on the following questions:
- When you search the Internet, which search engine do you use? Why this one?
- What type of search strategy do you use so that the search engine locates relevant pages?
- Once you find relevant pages, how do you decide if they are any good?
- What guidance/training, if any, have you received from past teachers on how to search the Internet and to make decisions about the quality of websites that you find?
We will discuss your responses to these questions as a whole class, looking at NETS for better searching
2. Next:
- Go to http://www.dhmo.org/
- Is this a quality website? Why/why not? Make brief notes on your responses on your laptop and prepare to share these with your group.
- Once you have done this, conduct a search of the Internet to find guidance on who to assess the quality and credibility of websites. Make brief notes on what you learn from your search about key factors that you should consider when evaluation the quality of a website and in making decisions about if and how to use a the website.
- Once Helen gives the signal, move into the following small groups (1) Dylan, Jodi, John, Josh (2) Bryan, Kirk, Laura, Tara
Discuss your responses to the (a) DHMO site and (b) to how you decide on the quality and credibility of websites. Have one group member record your group's responses on your laptop using Inspiration.
- Prepare to share your findings with the whole class (copy your Inspiration notes onto your jump drive and bring to Helen's computer when you are called on to share your findings.
Whole class discussion of findings and of implications of this for preparing your students to be critical consumers of the Internet.
