Creating an Apple (Claris) Works Slide
Show
(Developed by Helen Rallis, last revised March 2001)
Creating slides
- Plan the entire show (what slides to include,
sequencing, and if there is to be any text on the slides).
- Open a new drawing document in Apple Works
- Under the Format menu, select Document.
This will bring up the Document dialog box. In this box, under Size,
leave the number of pages across set at 1, but change the number under down
to the number of slides you want to have in your slide show. Click OK.
- Master Page: If you want to set a design for
all the slides in your presentation that includes certain text or images to
be repeated on all slides, you can set up a master page. To do this, under
the Options menu, select Master Page. This brings up a blank
page. Insert the desired elements. To return to your slides again, go back
up to the Options menu and deselect Master Page.
- Title Slide: You may want to have the first
slide of the show (the first page in your Apple Works document) be your title
slide where you type in the slide show name, your name, and any other information
you would like (similar to the title slide in Power Point). You can also include
clip art or photographs on this page.
- Insert the photographs you want for your slide
show onto the AppleWorks pages you have created. Usually it's best to have
one photograph per page (but it's up to you what effect you want to have here).
To insert the photographs there are a couple of different ways to do this:
Copy and Paste:
- Open the photograph in Photoshop or other image editing software.
- Save it as a gif or jpeg at a resolution of 72 ppi.
- Select the area of the photograph you want to appear on the slide (this
may be the entire photograph or just part of it).
- Copy the image (usually Edit>Copy)
- Switch to AppleWorks, and open the page on which you wish to insert the
photograph.
- Paste the image onto the page (Edit>Paste)
Insert picture from file:
- Have the blank AppleWorks slide open
- From the File menu, select Insert. Navigate to where to
saved the picture, and click the Insert button.
- Adjust picture size to fit the slide. Be sure
not to resize it too large so that the quality of the picture is compromised
and it is no longer clear. You may find that you need to go back to the original
high quality image (the one that you saved the first time you took or scanned
the picture). To resize the photo you can:
- Resize it Photoshop before inserting it into the slide or
- Resize it once you have inserted it by holding the shift key (to maintain
the slide proportions) and dragging outwards on one of the corner handlebars
To set up the slide show:
From the Window menu, select Slide Show. This will bring up the
slide show dialog box.
In
the slide show dialog box you can set the following:
- Rearrange the order of the pages: Click on the page under "Order"
and drag it to the desired place within the order list.
- Set the slide options. The first 3 on the left are self explanatory. The
others:
- Fade: creates a fade transition effect between slides.
- Loop: will cause the slides to loop continuously.
- Advance every: type in the number of seconds you want each slide
to show (they will all show for the same length -- you cannot set times
for individual slides)
- Background: set the background color (the multicolored box) or
pattern (the blue dotted box). When you select one of these boxes a palette
of options will appear. Click one of the choices within the palette to
make your selection.
- Border: sets a colored or patterned border around the slide.
- QuickTime Options: use this if you include a QuickTime video in your slide
show. If you slide show is set to advance automatically, then you should be
sure to check "complete play before advancing" so that the video
clip can play through completely before the next slide appears.
- Opaque: This makes each slide non-transparent (so you can see only one slide
at a time).
- Transparent: This allows you to see the current slide as well as the one(s)
behind it, creating a series of overlays .
- Hidden: enables you to hide this slide from view (so you'd use this for
slides you didn't necessarily want to show in a presentation, but wanted as
back up).
To show the slide show:
- From the Window menu, select Slide Show, and click the Start
button.
- To end the slide show, press the Q key or escape key.
