Accessing www account using Fetch

  1. Open Fetch (usually found in UMD Communications folder). This will bring up a New Connections window.
  2. In the "Host" box enter: www.d.umn.edu
  3. In the "User ID" box enter: yourlogin (This is the same as your UMD e-mail login. e.g. mine is hrallis)
  4. In the "Password" box enter: yourpassword (this is the same as your UMD e-mail password)
  5. In the "Directory" box enter: www (NOTE: it's very important that this says www and NOT ub, otherwise you will run into problems later)
  6. Click on the "OK" button.

  7. This will open your UMD www account. You will see a listing of the contents of your UMD web account. If you don't have a web page yet, there won't be much in this (but there will be some stuff that is needed for your web pages to work -- e.g. ADeskTop, .finderinfo, .IDeskTop. You don't put this there, and shouldn't remove it).

My web account has a lot in it already. It looks like this:

Uploading to your www account

  1. Go up to the menu > select Remote > Put Folders and Files

screen show showing remote > out folders & files

  2. This will bring up a box asking you to locate the folder and files that you wish to upload (or "put"). Navigate to where you have the folders and /or files. When you find them, click on them once, and then click on the Add button. You can go back an select another file or folder, click Add again, etc, until you are ready to upload. The picture below shows that I have selected the folder "educ5413" and added it. I have already clicked on the Add button, so the folder is listed in the "Files and Folders to upload" box (note: you can see it is a folder because the icon next to it looks like a folder).

  3. When you have are ready to upload, click on the Done button. This will bring up Put Files box that looks like this:

screen shot of text & raw data

It should default to "Text" and "Raw Data" Don't worry about what this means -- just click on the OK button.

  4. A little dog will appear running on your screen (it is "fetching" your file/folders to your web account!). When it's finished, your web account window will appear showing the files/folders that you have just uploaded. If you don't believe they are really there, go to your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer), type in the address of your www account (it will be http://www.d.umn.edu/~username, where "username" is your login).

To remove files/folders from your www account

Removing files and folders from your www account is very similar to uploading them.

  1. From the menu select >Remote > Delete Directory or File:

    screen shot of deleting files

  2. A box will appear asking you is you are sure you want to delete the file or folder that you highlighted. If you are sure, click the Delete button.
