Uploading Images in Moodle

Guidelines by Helen Mongan-Rallis. Last updated: January 20, 2008

Uploading image within Moodle discussion forum

Note: Moodle allows you to upload only one image per discussion post, so if you wish to upload more than one image within a discussion, you will need to create a new post for each image that you upload.

Inserting image by attaching image to your post (this is the easier method to use)

  1. Create a new discussion thread or click on the "reply" button to respond to an existing discussion.
  2. Type the text of your message within the text box. It's important to make reference in your message to the picture, telling readers about the image. If there are any users in your Moodle course who have visual impairments and who use a screen reader (something that reads the page aloud to them if they can't see what is on it), then it is particularly important that you describe the picture in enough detail that they can understand what it is that you are showing in the image).
  3. Click on the "Browse" button that appears below the text window next to where it says "Attachment" --> click on this and browse to the location of your image.
  4. Click on the "save changes" button. A window will appear letting you know that the changes have been saved, and shortly thereafter your post will appear with the image inserted into the message.

Inserting image by uploading image using (more advanced method)

  1. Create a new discussion thread or click on the "reply" button to respond to an existing discussion.
  2. Type the text of your message within the text box.
  3. Above the text message box, click on the insert image icon (it looks like a little picture of a mountain) --> this will open the insert image window [see image below showing each of these steps]
    1. Click on the "browse" button and navigate to where the image is on your computer
    2. Click on the "upload" button --> this will upload your image and the image will appear in the list of files that you have within your Moodle account
    3. Click on the file name in the list (e.g. in this example, my image is called HelenTaySkiBarrsTrailDec07.jpg)
    4. The URL of the image will appear in the "Image URL" window at the top of the page.
    5. Type a description of the image in the box next to "alternate text." Reason: If there are any users in your Moodle course who have visual impairments and who use a screen reader (something that reads the page aloud to them if they can't see what is on it), then it is particularly important that you describe the picture in enough detail that they can understand what it is that you are showing in the image.
    6. Click the "OK" button. This will insert the picture into your forum post.
