CS 3111 Writing Assignments

Writing assignments will be conducted in class on most Wednesdays.

At least a week prior to the writing assignment date, the assignment topic will be made available via a link from the course calendar.

On the day of the assignment, you may bring a 3"x5" index card with handwritten notes. (Blank cards will be handed out in class so you don't have to buy them.) You may also use your copy of the reading for the assignment.

The essay will be composed in class, and handed in at the end of class. No electronic devices may be used. The essay will be handwritten.

Each assignment will consist of one essay addressing a series of questions.

Essays will be graded on the basis of your narrative description and also on the strength of your argumentation. You will not be graded on which side of a controversial issue you take, but on how well you state your case, use examples, and cite material from the readings. Examples from the required readings are expected in your essays, but other relevant examples that you can find in your own research will strengthen your presentation.

Grading will also take into account good writing style and spelling. You must write in complete, grammatical English sentences, organized into well composed paragraphs. (For instance, it won't do to hand in an outline.)
