FAQ Page
Below are the answers to a few common questions that students have had.
If you have any questions at all please e-mail us at umd@.westhill.ac.uk
and we will put them up (with a students point of view). Also visit the SIE
handbook for more information
1. What do you wear?
- When we came, we were told to wear somber colored clothes (black, white,
and gray), and that the fashion was 2 years ahead. Many Brits dress like that
but we have learned to wear what we are comfortable and happy in. Make sure
to bring a formal outfit if you plan on attending the Manor House formals.
2. Is the beer warm?
- Not unless you set it out.
3. What is the number 1 thing to bring?
- Umbrella
- Money (remember the exchange rate!)
- Waterproof coat with hood
4. What were some of the culture shocks?
- English breakfasts (All fried food with baked beans, and tomatos)
- Exchange rate and banking
- Paying to use public restrooms
- Mayonnaise on salads... bring dressing
- Local calls are not free
5. Should I bring a Laptop?
- For the students living in Manor House you can hook up to high speed
internet for free (new this year) with a standard network card (the same that
can be used at UMD Res Halls). There are library facilities available on the
campus, but there is no IM and the library is not open very late. DVD's, late
night homework and chating are advantages to bringing a computer.
6. How is tranportation?
- Birmingham has a very vast bus system, and almost everywhere can be reached
by bus. Walking is very common so be prepared to walk a lot. Buses only run
until midnight but taxis run all night. Any place in England or Europe can
be reached by train or coaches.
7. How should I go about packing
and what kind of suitcases should I bring?
- We would recommend bringing a LARGE suitcase (make sure when it is all
packed that it weighs no more than 70 pounds unless you want to pay an overage
charge) and then bring an internally framed backpack. Good places are REI
or Gander Mountain or other outdoor shops. Let them know that you are traveling
a month in Europe and they will fit it for you. And remember for size of the
backpack that you don't want it too big because its a pain to carry around
for a month and if it is too small then you won't be able to fit enough in
it for a month. ONE TIP: (nobody follows this tip but it is a good one)...
don't over-pack! seriously because you will NOT be able to bring it all home
once you buy stuff here.
