Study Abroad Opportunities

Benefits of Study Abroad

Studying abroad is a life-changing experience.  One of the most personally and professionally rewarding things you can do is to spend a semester studying in another country.  You may never be able to travel for an extended period like this after you graduate.

The Department of Computer Science encourages you to spend a portion of your sophomore or junior year earning CS credits at recognized institutions overseas.  You will find courses that directly fill required UMD CS and IS&T requirements as well as those that cover aspects of computing not offered at UMD.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

UMD has a formal partnership agreement with several institutions guaranteeing that you can attend there while paying the UMD tuition rate.  You can also use your financial aid for study abroad.  For details on fees, talk to the UMD International Education Office.

Universities and Courses

You may select from a range of courses applying to your major or minor in CS or IS&T.  All courses listed are taught in English.  The following list applies to the 2003-2004 academic year.

If you are interested in looking into the feasibility of study abroad for your CS or IS&T degree please visit the CS Department International Programs Advisor (Jim Allert, 324 Heller Hall) or sending him email to find out more details.

New Zealand

The University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand, Department of Computer Science

New Zealand is in the South Pacific (near Australia).  They speak English and drive on the left.  Hamilton is a city the size of Duluth and is located in the center of New Zealand’s North Island.  Within an hour and a half drive are major surfing beaches, volcanoes, ski areas, fantastic glowworm caves, geysers and hot springs, and Auckland (New Zealand’s largest city).  The CS Department is almost twice the size of UMD and offers many courses similar to ours and some that we cannot.

*   There are two semesters in Sweden, each is broken down into halves (Fall 1 and Fall 2, Spring 3 and Spring 4).  Each half is called a session.  If you took 4 courses in one semester you would take two in the first session and two in the last session.

**  Some courses have no direct UMD equivalent but can be used to fulfill your upper division breadth requirement under the CS-4995 Special Topics course designation.

*** Language and culture courses can be used as Foreign Studies course credits at UMD.  Note: many students studying abroad can easily achieve a UMD Foreign Studies minor.
