Penicillins

Selection Strategy

  1. Know efficacy vs. the bug:

Group 1

Group 2:
Penicillinase-resistant

Group 3:
Aminopenicillins

Group 4:
Anti-pseudomonal

Penicillin G

Cloxacillin

AMPICILLIN

PIPERACILLIN

Penicillin V

Dicloxacillin

AMOXICILLIN

TICARCILLIN

Methicillin

Nafcillin

Oxacillin

  1. Identify route of administration:
  1. Acid stability is preferred à AMOXICILLIN is better than ampicillin (plasma concentrations of AMOXICILLIN are approximately twice as high as ampicillin with the same oral dose)
AMOXICILLIN is the penicillin of choice for H. pylori  treatment (ampicillin should not be substituted), because it is a broad-spectrum penicillin with good oral bioavailability and acid stability.
