Otoacoustic emissions

Theoretical DPOAE DPOAE Example

Theory behind distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) testing:

  • input (primary) tones are shown in blue (f1 and f2)
  • when those tones are presented, the following sounds --- shown in red --- should be recorded from the external ear canal, if the cochlea (and middle ear) are normal:
    • f1
    • f2
    • 2f1-f2
    • 3f1-2f2
    • 4f1-f2 etc.
  • actual DPOAE recorded from a person with normal hearing
  • f1 = 3164 Hz at 85 dB SPL

  • f2 = 3828 Hz at 85 dB SPL

  • 2f1-f2 = 2500 Hz at 14 dB SPL
