- as in the visual and gustatory systems, olfactory transduction consists of 4 steps:
- activation of the receptor protein (R)
- olfactants are chaperoned to the receptor by olfactory binding proteins
- the activated receptor stimulates a G-protein, Golf
- Golf activates an effector protein, adenylate cyclase III, that increases cAMP concentrations
- increases in cAMP cause the opening of non-specific ligand-gated cation channels, which leads to depolarization
