A 2013 SUMMER PROGRAM OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS
FUNDED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE and THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY

The objective of the program is to provide an opportunity for eight
carefully selected undergraduate students to learn firsthand the nature of
mathematical research. The participants will conduct independent
investigations, under the guidance of experienced researchers, on problems
in combinatorics, graph theory and number theory.

Dates: June 9 - August 15, 2013
Stipend: $4000 for the full 10 week period
Allowances: Travel up to $600; living expenses $1700; on-campus apartment housing
Location: University of Minnesota Duluth
Deadline: February 1, 2013

The program is intended primarily for students whose participation would
occur between their sophomore and junior years or junior and senior
years. However, others will also be considered.
Applicants will be selected on the basis of motivation, scholarly aptitude,
and a projection of the likely benefits to the participant. To qualify
for stipend support, an applicant must be U.S. citizen (or national)
or have permanent resident status.
The exact starting and ending dates as well as the length of stay are
negotiable. Participants are expected to spend a minimum of 40 hours
per week on their research. There will be organized social and recreational
activities such as biking, rafting and hiking.

A complete application consists of the standard cover sheet (ignore
"current title/dates", "highest degree/institution/dates"), two letters of
recommendation, a transcript (it need not be official) OR a list of
all college/university level courses with grades, and a statement that
describes your academic interests, your long-term career plans, and
experiences that especially qualify you for participation.

Applications are submitted at http://www.mathprograms.org/
