Dear Mathematics Student:

Since 1977 I have directed forty-two summer undergraduate research
programs at the University of Minnesota Duluth. For 2023, Duluth will host
a program that provides free on-campus housing and up to $800 for travel
expenses for nine participants for nine weeks to do research
in combinatorics, combinatorial number theory, or graph theory under the supervision
of experienced researchers. Due to limited funding, I cannot provide stipends.
Many schools will provide support for their students. Please inquire about this.
Students with their own full-funding are eligible. Fifteen to twenty Duluth REU
alumni will visit and participate in all activities.

It is my expectation that each participant will be the author or coauthor of a
research paper based on his or her work done in Duluth and that this paper will
be published in a well-regarded journal.

The Duluth program offers a community-of-peers setting that emphasizes
developing the research ability of each student. Participants can work independently
or jointly with a Duluth REU alumni who is a graduate student.

Duluth is a beautiful city over-looking Lake Superior. The cool summer weather,
clean air and clear water attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. There
is much to see and do in the surrounding area. There will be organized recreational
activities such as biking, rafting, and hiking for program participants.

UMD has furnished apartments with two bedrooms, a bathroom,
kitchen and living room. Each participant will his/her own bedroom.
The exact starting and ending dates for the program are negotiable
but the target dates are May 31 through August 4, 2023. The application deadline
February 15, 2023. Applicants must be submitted via AMS Math Programs.

A list of the results of previous summer research programs, a list
of previous participants and their schools, and a detailed description
of the program are available at

Applications can be submitted at
