Text: Linear Algebra
and its Applications Third Edition, by David Lay
Grades: Grades will be based on a 200
point final, three 100 point tests and 100 points
in the form of homework assignments, for a total of 600 points. I usually
try
to grade homework on a 90-80-70-60 scale. Hour exams will probably be
graded on a slightly more generous scale.
Makeup exams or incompletes are given only under extreme circumstances.
Topics: Logic: truth tables,
propositional and predicate logic
Proof techniques: Direct proofs, indirect proofs, proof by contradiction,
proof by cases, counterexamples to disproof statements
Linear Algebra: Systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, determinants,
eigenvectors and eigenvalues, vector spaces, linear
transformations.
I will have some handouts on logic and proof techniques. For the linear
algebra material, I hope to cover most of chapters 1-3, a significant part
of
chapter 5 and pieces of chapter 4. I will cover additional topics (chapters
6, 7) if time permits.
Final Exam: Friday, December 19, 10:00-11:55 AM
Notes: Individuals who have any
disability, either permanent or temporary, which
might affect their ability to perform in this class should contact me as
soon as
possible so that I can adapt methods, materials or tests as needed to provide
for equitable participation.
